What will you learn?

This one-day training session offers an introduction to the principles of scanning including optical resolution, colour profiling, source and target sizing and the different methods of saving files. You will be working with high specification scanners, including flatbed scanners and dedicated film scanners.

What previous experience will you need?

A basic knowledge of computers, operating systems and image manipulation
applications, such as Adobe PhotoShop would be helpful.

What will the session include?

  • An introduction into dedicated scanning software and Twain systems
  • An explanation of how different scanners operate including flatbed, flatbed with film adapters and dedicated film scanners
  • Using flatbed scanners
  • Scanning negative, positive and transparency film
  • Reflective light scanning eg. document
  • Original print art work scanning
  • Scanning de-screening (moiré pattern)
  • Using the colour setting ie. tonal curve
  • Properties of colour - ie. hue, saturation and brightness
  • Focusing the image
  • Saving files
  • Consideration of scanning resolution to meet output requirements
  • Source and target size.
  • An explanation of the difference between RGB and CMYK and their uses

This course complements our Introduction to PhotoShop course and vice versa.
